June 30, 2017 - Speed Bag

Want everything you need to improve your speed and agility in one compact carrying case? The Deluxe Speed and Agility Set from Soccer Innovations is a compact, portable powerhouse of training. Now a coach, parent or player can have everything they need to improve footwork and explosiveness in a handy kit.

It comes with two 4 meter ladders, two each 6", 9" and 12" hurdles, a speed-chute & bag, speed harness & bag, large reaction ball, evasion belt and ten disc cones. It all fits into a convenient carry bag which can be left in the trunk of the car for easy storage and for carrying to and from the field. And while it is designed for soccer, it can be also used for football, baseball, nearly any sport where fast, fancy footwork comes in handy.

One of the biggest reasons young athletes don't train on their own is that they don't have direction. They're not sure what to do or how to do it. With the Deluxe Speed and Agility Set, the tools are all provided for anyone to workout. Whether it be a private lesson at the field or simply in the backyard, just unzip the bag and the rest will take care of itself.

July 15, 2016 - Up and Running

The first thing you notice is the bullet-shaped protective case. This thing looks and feels like it could be dropped from the top floor of a tall building and an egg inside wouldn't crack. That's just the beginning. What's inside is even more impressive.

AMO, (Advanced Multi-sport Optics) contacted us and asked if we'd like to try out a pair of their top-of-the line sports sunglasses. AMO is an up-and-coming brand but with a global following that provides high quality sports sunglasses and is fighting hard against the mega sports brands. It is niche, small but very interesting.

The pair they sent us was their Ironcatcher model, which looked very similar in style to another well-known name. However, digging in, one finds that these are not simply knock-offs, (though they do cost less), but that the AMO brand is out to beat the competition in quality and, from what we can see, they've succeeded.

The AMO frames are made from Grilamid TR90 – the best of the best. It is lightweight, resistant to stress cracking and material fatigue and stands up well against UV exposure and extreme temperatures.

The polycarbonite NXT lenses are vented for optimal performance when going fast, (think running, cycling). NXT lenses hands-down beat other lenses on the market. They're optically clearer, UV resistant, with hydrophobic and anti-scratch coatings. They are also interchangeable and easily clipped in and out of the frames.

Maybe the greatest benefit to the athlete is the way these glasses fit. With an adjustable nose piece and adjustable temple arms, you can actually contour your AMO's to fit your face, the way you like. This customization option means it is almost like ordering from the factory to meet your individual specifications. I can tell you that I've never worn a pair that fits better than these. We also liked the cool style feature of being able to switch out the black temple arms with an included set of yellow that give the glasses a hot two-tone look.

They market their products for action sports like cycling, running and triathlon. Being a baseball dad and having to wince at the cost of the most popular baseball sunglasses out there, I could totally see these for hardball players too. But whatever your sport, we'd be surprised if you didn't find them to be superior in quality to those big boys. And you'll be surprised that once you put them on, you won't want to take them off.

June 30, 2015 - Step Into the Trap

Most of the products we review these days have accompanying marketing videos. Some are quite effective while others are...not so much. Zoid Fitness is a product that is easy to understand in concept so you'd think a video touting its benefits might not be necessary. But we're glad they made one. Because after we watched it, we were blown away.

My daughter will soon be playing college soccer. She frequently works on her agility through solo training. A year or so ago she asked for an agility ladder, which we bought for her.

So when the folks from Zoid contacted us and asked us to try their agility training system we were excited to see if this was something new and different. When it arrived and I asked my daughter to check it out, I have to admit she didn't see the point. She said she had an agility ladder and that was good enough. Then I asked her to come over to the computer so she could watch the video.

Like most teenage girls she isn't big on admitting she was wrong. It only took about a minute for her to say she “got it,” and understood now what the big deal was. The beauty and power of Zoid is its versatility. There's no other product out there we know of that can do so much.

Instead of one long and one-dimensional ladder, Zoid is a set of twelve extremely heavy-duty rubber trapezoids which can be arranged in a nearly infinite number of patters. We had assumed that these would be light weight and flimsy, maybe like workout cones, but the product is thick and very durable. This, of course, means that no matter how many times they're stepped on, tossed around and otherwise abused, they'll still be in perfect shape year-after-year.

They can be used in nearly any sport and on any surface. You can download a tutorial from their website on how to set up many, various patterns and do multiple training exercises. There really is no way you can become bored and there are so many skills you can develop. Coaches can use their creativity in designing challenging, custom regimens. Patterns like snakes, circles, hopscotch – some connected some segmented – each one developing different muscles and strengths. Every personal skills trainer should own a set.

But again, if you're still not sure...go take a look at the video. If it convinced my daughter, there's a good chance you'll be sold too. The beauty is you don't have to be a genius to use this product. But the folks who thought it up sure were.

May 13, 2015 - Sweet Stuff

Is there anyone who doesn't like the smell of cedar? And is there anyone who does like the smell of old, musty, sweaty sports gear and or shoes? We first reviewed Stuffits five years ago when they sent us out a pair to try. Since then they've grown by leaps and bounds and we couldn't be prouder of their success.

Stuffits original product, the classic, is a tightly-sewn case of anti-microbial fabric "stuffed" with delightful cedar. Cedar not only imparts its fragrance in anything it touches, but it is a natural moisture absorber. Stuffits claimed that when you placed their product inside shoes that were smelly or wet -- or both, that they would freshen and smell better, last longer.

We have been using the same pair for years and they work great. Get caught out in the rain and your shoes are soaked? In the past that meant you may as well throw them out because of how they'd smell forever after. But now, just let them sit overnight inserted with Stuffits and tomorrow they'll be dry and redolant of sweet cedar.

Stuffits now makes their product for gloves, gear bags and helmets too. Just about anything you can think of that gets wet, sweaty and stinky is a prime candidate. All you need to do is try it once to believe it.

So don't fear the wet, the sweat, the smell. Just stuff it and tomorrow you'll feel like you're walking through a cedar forest. And who cares if it starts to rain?

September 13, 2013 - Big, Strong and Quick

When it comes to convenience, ease-of-use and quality, we've not seen anyone rival products from JUGS Sports. But now, with the advent of their new Complete Practice Travel Screen, they've outdone themselves, and you may not believe it until you try it.

They sent us one to check out and first thing I saw on the outside of the box was their claim that it sets up in two minutes. “We'll see,” I thought. When I hoisted the sturdy nylon travel case it's packed in I felt the heft of it's seventeen pounds. This wasn't some flimsy, lightweight screen. This was substantial. I unzipped the travel bag and what did I see? Fiberglass poles. Lots of them. An instruction page. My mind flashed to wrangling with tents on camping trips, and what a pain in the neck that is. I almost decided to give up before I began, just let my son set it up since he's so much better at these types of things. Two minutes? Maybe if you have a Mechanical Engineering degree from Cal Poly.

Trust me, when I tell you this. It took me less than two minutes. The poles? They're all connected by bungees. They basically spring together right out of the bag. The frame went up in a snap. Then the net attaches with carabiners and a couple of side Velcro flaps. Done. If you want to put up the optional flip-over strike zone you might invest another twenty seconds. I could not believe something this big, this sturdy, was that easy to erect.

It is designed so that it will not tip over in heavy wind. It's huge -- seven feet tall -- which means it will snag everything, including thos mis-hits. And, though I haven't yet taken it down, it is already plain to see it will be just as quick and simple. I have to admit, with the blue JUGS Pop-up screen, I sometimes struggle getting it back to its original round shape to fit back in its carry bag. My other son, who uses the pop-up screen for the travel team he coaches, has no such issues and has shown me several times how easy it is for him. Like I said, I'm not good at these things. And now I don't have to be.

The Complete Screen was voted “Best of Show” at the American Baseball Coaches Association convention earlier this year. No wonder. As always, JUGS takes care of the engineering so that you don't have to. Maybe before our next family vacation they can branch out into camping tents.
