Jan 31 - It Sells Itself

catcherschest.jpgA salesman might tell you this about the All-Star Sports (www.all-starsports.com), Young Pro Catcher’s gear: “The MVP2200 mask carries a soft fabric chin pad, dual density foam liner and patented I-bar vision frames for maximum visibility. The CP28 Pro chest protector is the state-of-the art, combining a patent-pending collarbone protection pad, exclusive GTF™ (Gell Tech Foam) padding system, low rebound multi-layered foam and front sternum plates, with an anatomically designed rib pattern and 5-point adjustable harness. Your LG22WPRO leg guards are the standard for the industry. E-Z form triple knee design, extended shin pad protection, built up knee cap padding, exclusive venting system and removable second toe are just a few features of these exceptional leg guards.” And it would all be true. A young player would tell you it is the most comfortable and protective set of gear he’s ever worn.

My son is a middle infielder, who now wants to be a catcher. He’s forced my other boys into the backyard to pitch to him until their arms were sore so that he can be Joe Mauer or Ivan Rodriguez. His comment was that this was the first time he’s worn gear that didn’t really even feel like he had gear on. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come to the dinner table in it.

This is top-of-the line stuff. You block a ball with this chest protector and the ball stays put. The design of the equipment is so high-tech it belies the fact that All-Star Sports is a family business that still believes in craftsmanship and personal attention. A good salesman might tell you all of this and more. A great salesman would just let your player strap on the gear. Because he knows once its on, he won’t ever want to take it off.
