Feb 23 - A Small Price to Pay
We all know sunglasses are supposed to provide protection from UV rays. This weekend I learned that the right pair can protect more than that.
I was sitting in the bleachers watching one of my sons’ baseball games at a sports complex where four fields backed into each other surrounding a central clubhouse. Without warning, a ball from an adjacent field hit me squarely between the eyes. There was an instant of black and then a few seconds of slow comprehension, but then, as the fog lifted my first thoughts were to retrieve my expensive Oakleys, (www.oakley.com) which had been knocked off my face.
As the other parents rushed me to see if I was OK, it began occurring to me that, aside from a tiny cut on the bridge of the nose, I as fine. No black eyes, no broken nose and no concussion. It may have just been luck, but that ball hit me with some velocity. It may have been more than luck. It may have been my M-Frames.
Their shatterproof, scratch-resistant Plutonite® polycarbonate lenses not only eliminate distortion and maintain visual clarity but, in this instance, provided a shield against what otherwise would have been a broken nose, and maybe worse. When my wife gave me my Oakleys for my birthday, my first reaction was that she paid too much for a simple pair of sunglasses. I’d have been happy with a $10 pair from the drugstore. But now, thinking of what might have happened if an ordinary pair had shattered on impact, it could be that these Oakleys more than paid for themselves on one foul ball.
There’s no guarantee that a pair of Oakleys will protect your face and eyes from any and all disaster. But this weekend I became a believer that sometimes you might indeed just get what you pay for.
