July 17 - Concentrating on the Numbers

supergoalie.jpgSometimes the simplest ideas are the most effective. Case and point: The Goalkeeper Training Ball from SuperGoalie, (www.supergoalie.com).

The concept couldn’t be easier to understand or teach to a young player. Each panel is numbered. When the ball is hit towards the goalie, the goaltender must focus on the ball all the way into the hands and, upon catching it, read aloud the number she sees.

If it sounds too easy, try it. Not only do players enjoy the drill, but you’ll see a noticeable difference in their concentration. Baseball coaches have utilized the “Dot Drill” for years, putting colored dots on some balls and not on others to teach their hitters to keep their eyes on the ball.

Nothing is more heart-wrenching than to see a young player let a ball go through their hands because they thought they had an easy catch. Teaching players to “watch the ball into your hands,” is sometimes easier said than done. With SuperGoalie it’s easy. And fun.
